China’s Competitive Intelligence Research(2000)
WU Yishan
Competitive Intelligence (CI) has attracted much interest and attention from China’s information professionals since the mid-1990s. The Chapter on Competitive Intelligence (CCI) of the China Society for Scientific and Technical Information (CSSTI) was established in April of 1995. It is a national organization that has been approved by the China Association of Science and Technology (CAST) and registered in the Ministry of Internal Affairs of China.
Since the founding of CCI, it has organized 6 national academic symposia, held more than 10 lectures or training courses on CI, supported the publishing of a monograph on CI, published 4 symposium proceedings and some 310 papers. 19 issues of the Bulletin of CCI have been distributed.
CCI has completed some influential research projects, such as “CI and Business Competitiveness”, “Study on the Patterns and Operation Mechanisms of Business CI Systems”, “Study on Competition Strategy of the Beijing Dahua Porcelain Factory”, etc.
So far, CII has managed to claim 138 corporate members and more than 510 individual members. These members are associated with more than 20,000 information professionals or information consultants in China.
Just in 1999, in cooperation with other professional societies or organizations, CCI has carried out the following activities:
--National Symposium on Information Consulting was held;
--Advanced Workshop entitled “Brand Strategy Wins the World for You” was held;
--National Symposium on CI Skills and Case Studies was held;
--Organized a Chinese delegation consisting of CI professionals, which visited USA and Canada, and invited a US expert on CI, Prof. John E. Prescott of University of Pittsburgh, to give lectures in China;
--Carried out a joint research with American partners and two rounds of questionnaire survey on CI practice in USA and China have been conducted;
--The book, “China’s Information Research and Competition Intelligence towards 21st Century”, has been published.
China’s CI professional are eager to extend more international co-operations and raise CI research in China to a higher level.
