Uphill - Christina Rossetti (1830 - 1894)

Does the road wind up hill all the way?
Yes, to the very end.
Will the day's journey take the whole long day?
From morn to night, my friend.

But is there for the night a resting-place?
A roof for when the slow dark hours begin.
May not the darkness hide it from my face?
You cannot miss that inn.

Shall I meet other wayfarers at night?
Those who have gone before.
Then must I knock, or call when just in sight?
They will not keep you standing at that door.

Shall I find comfort, travel-sore and weak?
Of labor you shall find the sum.
Will there be beds for me and all who seek?
Yea, bed for all who come.

After reading the poem “uphill”, I wonder what the title “uphill” suggests. When you are at the top of a hill, you shall overlook a magnificent landscape or further, uphill implies “Heaven ”? We are quite familiar with the conventional imagery that going up the hill is as difficult as approaching Heaven; in contrast, going down a hill is as easy as approaching Hell (Valley is conventional symbol of Hell or evil.) So I think the title here indicates approaching Heaven. There are two speakers in the poem, one asking questions-the apprehensive traveler, and the other answering whom I regard as God Almighty or God of Death. The first stanza says that the road uphill is to wind all the way to the very end. The road is like a life’s journey and if you want to seek Heaven, you shall encounter some obstacles or troubles on the way. The “end” means death. “From morn to night” means “from cradle to grave.” You shall pursue for Heaven till you die. In the second stanza, “dark hour” means the period when you doubt the truth or the existence of God and the words” resting-place” and “inn” indicates comfort. When you are tired or confused on the way to Divinity, you will have resources to fine consolation like Bible or some inspiration. In the third stanza, there are also other travelers on the way and they would be at all times ready to greet you and make friends with you, which implies that on the way to Eternity, you are not alone and you find company all the way. In the fourth stanza, after you finish your labor in the secular world, you will have a place to rest, that is, death. “Beds for all who come.” Beds stand for death or can be interpreted as Heaven.
