@ 有人译《苦瓜和尚画语录》“形天地万物”句(《了法章第二》)为“the imitation of all forms of things in the universe”,以“模仿”(imitation)解“形”,是我不能接受的。中国画的精神——简单说是“神似”,复杂说即庄子的精神(如徐复观《中国的艺术精神》)——恰好不是“模仿”(那是丹纳《艺术哲学》说西方古典艺术的观点),石涛兄的画当然更不模仿了。
@ The New Yorker杂志创立者Harold Ross认为只有特指的东西(designating a unique entity)才能用the。他反对人家说“His Vermont house is full of valuable paintings”,要说“He has a house in Vermont and it is full…”。大作家Nabokov为Yorker写过系列回忆文章,其中一篇说,“voices speaking all together, a walnut cracked, the click of the nutcracker carelessly passed…”Ross在旁边批语:他们家只用一个nutcracker吗?(were the Nabokovs a one-nutcracker family?)
@ Andrew C Bradley(1851-1935)在就任牛津诗歌教授的演讲“为诗而诗”(Poetry for poetry’s sake)中说,内容与形式的统一不是“偶然”(accident),而是诗之所以为诗、艺术之所以为艺术的“本性”(essence)(this identity of content and form … is no accident; it is of the essence of poetry in so far as it is poetry, and of all art in so far as it is art)。我们不能将诗歌的形式与内容分离,正如不能将音乐的声音与意义分离。
