一篇文章从投稿到发表一般会经历初审、同行外审和编辑、校对、作者确认等很多步骤。在我N年的编辑生涯中,初审稿件数千篇,看同行评审意见无数。就某篇文章为什么会被退稿,原因多种多样,其中,除了不在本刊刊稿范围和存在学术伦理不规范的问题以外,比较直接的原因主要有以下方面:
文章的题目冗长无新意(编辑和审稿人不爱看,读者也不会喜欢。我大致看了一下Nature和 Science上的文章,题目总体来说都不长。Nature 和Science近五年被引最多的前20篇文章中,没有一篇文章的题目超过12个实词。)
图表质量差(作为编辑,看到质量极差的图马上联想到一些一编再编、一改再改,到最后要发表的时候,图的质量也只是差强人意的文章。因此,倒不如不给这样的稿件麻烦编辑和审稿人的机会,直接初审退稿!)
写作质量差,拼写错误、语法错误随处可见,文字前后逻辑关系不清楚。(这样的稿件如果在初审时不被挡下,有的审稿人会发飚! 在多年的期刊编辑实践中,这样的1篇稿件如果任其继续往下走,往往是我们处理5篇甚至更多篇稿件的工作量。趁早退掉,省却编辑和审稿人无数的烦恼。副主编Iain Taylor一再强调,投稿的文章写得清楚明了是作者的基本义务,不然,审稿人如何能够理解文章的研究内容并作出恰当的评价呢?)
一篇稿件具有一个有吸引力的题目(sexy title), 文字流畅,图表美观,读来赏心悦目,立即会给编辑和审稿人留下良好的印象,文章被送审和被接收的可能性会大增 。
