When I look back on my life, I see more than my own footprints. There were my parents, of course. There were also teachers at every phase of my life, from grade school all the way through college. And, there were graduate school professors. Unlike in college when there were 50 students in one class, students in graduate schools had close interaction with their professors then. Whenever I look back on my school years, I am always filled with gratitude, especially toward my professors and mentors in meteorology andoceanography.

当我回首往事，我看到在我自己的脚印周围，还有许许多多的脚印。有我父母的脚印。有每一个阶段的老师们的脚印，从小学一年级一直到大学毕业；研究生院教授们的脚印更是清新可见。当时的研究生与教授之间有着比较密切的互动。每当想起我的学生时代，我就充满了感激之情，尤其是对我的气象学与海洋学的教授们和导师们。

I have many fond memories about the Meteorology Department of Zhongshan University, where I was a graduate student and then stayed on briefly as a junior faculty. I remember riding bicycle across the old Pearl River Bridge everyday to use a “super computer” off campus for my thesis work. I learnt how to play volleyball from my colleagues at the department. Though I never became very good at it, I was ableto join beach volleyball games when I was a graduate student at Nova in South Florida. I don’t need to close my eyes to see you, Prof. Chen, always neatly dressed and always with a kind smile. I never forget what you told us in agroup meeting before my graduation, on the importance of solidarity.
