哈佛Robert P. Kirshner去年因超新星宇宙学的成就获Wolf物理奖（For forging the path to supernova cosmology through his observations and insights），普林斯顿大学出版社顺便要再版他十多年前的一本小书，书里有一张漫画，主角是另一个超新星的人——今天说超新星、中子星、暗物质和引力透镜，几乎都要从他说起，他在70多年前就关注它们了。他就是Fritz Zwicky。

1934年1月19日美联社（AP）的漫画系列Be Scientific with Ol' Doc Dabble，画中引用了Fritz Zwicky的话：Cosmic rays are caused by exploding stars which bum with a fire equal to 100 million suns and then shrivel from 1/2 million mile diameters to little spheres 14 miles thick.

话里有三个数字：1亿，50万英里，14英里——从那么那么大到那么那么小的过程，就是超新星爆发。如蟹状星云就是1054年的超新星残骸，宋人有幸目睹了它爆发的壮观：“初，至和元年五月，晨出东方，守天关，昼见如太白，芒角四出，色赤白，凡见二十三日。”（《宋会要》）

Z戊戌变法那年出生在保加利亚Varna，16岁去苏黎世，成了爱因斯坦的ETH小师弟，1925年到Caltech，在那儿干到1968年荣誉退休。（他的简历可以写成the Bulgarian-born, Swiss-national astrophysicist based at the California Institute of Technology。）

Z古怪而叛逆（eccentric rebel），卓尔不群至令人讨厌。同事说他自诩天才（a self-proclaimed genius），思想不群却粗暴无礼。他在Caltech很孤独，也不讨物理圈的喜欢。他的文章常常带刺伤人。但Millikan就欣赏他的hair-brained ideas，说不定有对的呢。William Fowler也说，他初识FZ就感觉其人有直通终极知识的捷径（had the inside track to ultimate knowledge）。大概运气好，他确实对的时候多。他发现了星系团、“丢失的”物质、星系的引力透镜，还是喷气发动机之父；他为天体分类创立的“形态分析”（morphology analysis）后来广泛用于各种非量化系统（如有机体、生态系统、社会组织、词汇形式、概念和观念系统等）的研究。他对MA十分满意，1949年在Caltech说，形态学家（morphologist）不必是窄门专家，但其在不同专业的成果是专门家们梦想不到的。（morphologists,without being professionals on jet engines and propulsive power plants ingeneral, on the chemistry and metachemistry of prellants, on astronomy and onthe science of war, have produced results during the past decade which nospecialist in these fields even dreamed of.）。他还认为形态思想和作用（thought and action）从根本说来是自由人的特权（prerogative），能引领人们走向民主。

当然，Z最不朽的思想是30年代的“三元”猜想：超新星-中子星-宇宙线。1934年3月19日，他（与合作者）Walter Baade向美国物理学会“很保留地”报告了他们的发现（猜想）：超新星是从普通恒星向中子星的转变（With all reserve we advance the view that a super-nova represents the transition of an ordinarystar into a neutron star），也是宇宙线的来源。他们的两篇文章发表在同一期会刊：Baade, W.; Zwicky, F.
