About Us

Organizational Information

The New England Air Museum is owned and operated by the Connecticut Aeronautical Historical Association, a private, non-profit educational institution organized in 1959. Located at Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks, the Museum is the largest aviation museum in New England. This educational organization is dedicated to preserving and presenting historically significant aircraft and related artifacts, engaging visitors through high-quality exhibits helping them to understand aviation technology and history and inspiring students through innovative and hands-on educational programs. The Museum is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors and run by five (5) full-time employees, twelve (12) part-time employees, and over 175 volunteers.

Museum History

In 1981, the first of the Museum's existing five buildings (Civil, Military, 58th Bomb Wing Memorial and Restoration Hangar and storage building) was erected on its current site after a tornado destroyed the Museum's former location along Route 75 two years earlier. Today, the Museum houses one of the world's most outstanding collections of historic aviation artifacts; more than 80 aircraft and an extensive collection of engines, instruments, aircraft parts, uniforms and personal memorabilia. Within this collection are the last remaining four-engine American flying boat, the Sikorsky VS-44A, donated by its previous owner, actress Maureen O'Hara and restored to original condition; a B-29 Bomber; the Silas Brooks Balloon Basket (1870), the oldest surviving aircraft in the United States; the Bunce-Curtiss Pusher (1912), the oldest surviving Connecticut-built airplane; the Sikorsky S-39, the oldest surviving Sikorsky aircraft; and a Kaman K-225 helicopter, the oldest surviving Kaman-built aircraft.

Special Events

Speaker Program-Russell Gackenbach the navigator on the B-29 photo plane that participated in the Hiroshima atomic bombing

2nd Lt. Russell Gackenbach, Navigator on the B-29 ‘Necessary Evil.’ accompanied the B-29 ‘Enola Gay’ over Hiroshima with the task of photographing the mission. After the bomb was dropped and the ‘Enola Gay’ turned away, ‘Necessary Evil’ headed directly toward the target--where the bomb exploded in front of them—to document the event in pictures. Join us to hear the story of this unique mission from one of the few living participants in the Hiroshima bombing. The program begins at 6:30 p.m. and the Museum will open at 6:00 p.m. Free to New England Air Museum members, and $10 for non-members. Please call 860-623-3305 to reserve your seat!

Holiday Activities -

The Air Museum has special activities for your children and grandchildren on the following days:

Monday, December 26 – the popular LEGO contest will return. A room full of LEGO’s will be set up in the conference center and the theme is “You & Your Fantastic Flying Machine”. The program is for ages 3-12 from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for each age category: 3-5, 6-8, 9-12.

Tuesday, December 27 - the Museum will host a “mini” open cockpit program with about 6 aircraft open to including a helicopter, an airliner, a jet fighter and a WWII aircraft. All cockpits will close at 4:00 p.m.

Wednesday, December 28 - The Great Paper Airplane Challenge - Test your flying and folding skills to design a paper airplane that will fly the longest or the farthest during our first ever Great Paper Airplane Challenge. Prizes will be awarded for the longest flight and for the greatest “time in the air.”

Thursday, December 29 – There will be an Aero Modeling Workshop running from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on a first-come first-served basis. This activity takes about an hour and a half to complete. Children ages 8-14 can build and fly their own model. All children must be accompanied by an adult. There is a $4.00 cost for the kit.

Friday, December 30 - The Egg-Fantastic Egg Drop Challenge - Gravity is indeed a harsh mistress; especially if you are an egg. Join us to create a device that can keep a naked egg intact when dropped. Staff will provide the materials and the "egg-spert" advice to help create an original protective device for the egg, which will be dropped off the balcony of the B-29 Hangar to see if it can survive the fall.

The Museum is situated in three large display buildings consisting of more than 75,000 square feet of exhibit space. In fair weather, the outside storage yard is available for touring as well.

It is recommended that you allow at least 1 1/2 hours for your visit, though hard-core aviation and history enthusiasts will want to spend several hours viewing not only our aircraft and engine displays, but our many fascinating exhibits on such diverse topics as the Lafayette Escadrille, WWII Combat Gliders, the History of Sikorsky Aircraft, Early French Aviation, a History of Air Mail, the Tuskegee Airmen, Airships, and many others.

We have a small dining area with snack vending machines and aviation-related arcade games for the kids. A variety of restaurants can be found on nearby Route 75.

Please note: In the event of snowy or icy weather, the Museum may not be open. Please do not assume that we are open on a bad weather day without talking with a live person first during regular business hours at (860) 623-3305.
