科技英语写作基础（系列）：文章的结构

此书第一部分是关于一些“规则”（rules），第二部分是关于一些“原则”（principles）。显然，“规则”（rules）和“原则”（principles）有差别。但是，因为我们是在讨论写作，“规则”（rules）也不都是必须“死守”的。（具体的例子，请看11月11-30日的博客。）
接下来要讨论的一些“原则”（principles），应该能帮助大家更好地理解写作。理解（某一个“原则”）很重要，但是，实践（你自己去写）需要时间。我们常说：罗马不是一天建成的。
II. ELEMENTARY PRINCIPLES OF COMPOSITION

12. Choose a suitable design and hold to it.

A basic structural design underlies every kind of writing. Writers will in part follow this design, in part deviate from it, according to their skills, their needs, and the unexpected events that accompany the act of composition. The first principle of composition, therefore, is to foresee or determine the shape of what is to come and pursue that shape.

A sonnet is built on a fourteen-line frame, each line containing five feet. Hence, sonneteers know exactly where they are headed, although they may not know how to get there. Most forms of composition are less clearly defined, more flexible, but all have skeletons to which the writer will bring the flesh and the blood. The more clearly the writer perceives the shape, the better are the chances of success.

Note on “five feet”: “A sonnet is a one-stanza poem of fourteen lines, written in iambic pentameter. One way to describe a verse line is to talk about how many stressed and unstressed syllables are in the line. A simple grouping of syllables, some stressed, some unstressed, is called a foot. The iambic foot is an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable. Pentameter means there are five feet in the line. "Iambic Pentameter," then, means a line of ten syllables, which alternates unstressed and stressed syllables according to the iambic rhythm.”
