“While China’s economic rise is well-known. But the vast improvement in the health and longevity of its people—despite appalling levels of pollution—is less so. . . .” Thus begin the article in this week’s Economist in the China section of the magazine. Using life-expectancy in different parts of China as a surrogate measure of general health,the article presents some interesting statistics. For example, Shanghai is apparently the healthiest city in China. Life expectancy there, 83, equal that of Switzerland and would rank it among top five if compared among nations. Tibet’s has improved from 56, among the poorest in the world, to 70 in two decades but still poor compared to various European countries.
