A Most Sophisticated Scam Enabled by Modern Technology

First some background information:

1.   We know from experience that hackers are everywhere and ever capable. They can get into our PC and track our actions and obtain information easily. There is no privacy anymore. The best defense is not to do anything you are afraid to be made public.

2.   The male sex drive desire and for procreation are basic to human existence as a specy. This is why prostitution is known as the oldest profession; and pornography exist in all languages and literatures.

3.   The existence of Internet has made pornography easy and costless to access. At the same time, it is very difficult to PROVE in understandable way that one actually visited such sites. I dare say that almost all young males have at one time or other done so.

4.   Now the final piece of technological advance, I.e., ZOOM technology have enable visual record of a user’s action with his/her PC. This is because all computers are now equipped with a camera to enable video conferencing.

Thus, this perfect combination enables a scam letter which usually begins as follows:

“Dear so-and-so, I recently gained access to your PC and your address list. I also through your computer’s camera captured a video record of your visiting such and such pornographic site while performing an unspeakable sexual act on yourself. . . I am not greedy and only asking that you agree to send me US$1450.00 and I’ll destroy the video evidence. Otherwise I’ll send the video to everyone on your address list. . . .”

During the past year I myself have received such letter twice which I ignored because I know I did no such thing while using my PC. But I can imagine many persons will be scared into complying with the scam which became possible only with advance in modern PC technology.
