恩格斯1857年就提到Chinese nationality

《开放时代》2026年第2期发表中央民族大学法学院副教授邵六益的文章，“中华民族的人民性研究 ——以恩格斯的‘中华民族’论述切入”。

文章说，恩格斯在1857年的《波斯语中国》中就提出了Chinese nationality，1962年版《马克思恩格斯全集》将其译为“中华民族”。

邵六益写道：

恩格斯的“中华民族”论述为什么没有得到大家的关注?在回答之前还要注意原文“Chinese nationality”与现在常用的“Chinese nation”有着重要的区别。为什么恩格斯没有直接使用“Chinese nation”?为什么中译本将“Chinese nationality”翻译为“中华民族”?在《波斯与中国》中,“Chinese nationality”出现在下面的句子中: "In short, instead of moralizing on the horrible atrocities of the Chinese, as the chivalrous English press does, we had better recognize that this is a war pro aris et focis, a popular war for the maintenance of Chinese nationality, with all its overbearing prejudice, stupidity, learned ignorance and pedantic barbarism if you like; but yet a popular war." 中译本将这段话翻译为：

简言之，我们不要像道貌岸然的英国报刊那样从道德方面指责中国人的可怕暴行，最好承认这是“保卫社稷和家园”的战争，这是一场维护中华民族生存的人民战争。虽然你可以说，这场战争充满这个民族的目空一切的偏见、愚蠢的行动、饱学的愚昧和迂腐的野蛮，但它终究是人民战争。
