The favorite activity of mine is reading books. My reading covers various topics, such as literatures, history, philosophy, and economics. In fact, I like all materials that make me happy and thoughtful.
Books give me a lot of fun. While reading, I travel beyond any limitations of time and space, and I can even enter other worlds. Following Homer, I visit the ancient Greece, where gods and goddesses live so near the human being. Following Mark Twain, I join the adventures near the Mississippi with Tom and Huck. Even in my middle age now, I still like some books for children. Actually, I finished first two copies of Harry Potter last quarter.
Books help me understand the society fully. When I just grew up, I always found something uneasy, but I could not comprehend what is wrong. After reading Nineteen Eighty-Four and Animal Farm, I realized what the problem is. Later, I perused additional insightful treats, among which are The Road to Serfdom and The Fatal Conceit by Friedrich von Hayek, my favorite thinker. Although the society I live in is essentially the same, I feel much better because I has a belief that it will change sooner of later.
Books, including non-technical ones, are valuable in my career. I spent a lot of spare time on reading biographies, especially autobiographies, of scientists, scholars, writers and artists. Even novels are helpful. Actually, no other books than Small World taught me more about the university faculty life, although it was written in a rather exaggerated way. Last quarter, I completed another novel by David Lodge, Thinks, which is very interesting.
I figure that, in young generation's view, reading is an old-fashioned or even dying practice. I like reading books than any other activities. I do not envy the happiness of those who live in a paradise without books. Reading will be my favorite activity not only in my remaining life, but also in my eternal life, if the chance is offered.
