Hope is the thing with feathers

Hope is the thing with feathers

                        E Dickinson

"Hope" is the thing with feathers --
That perches in the soul --
And sings the tune without the words --

And never stops -- at all --永不停息

And sweetest -- in the Gale -- is heard --

And sore must be the storm --
That could abash the little Bird --它或许会让小鸟感到难为情 That kept so many warm --它曾留住了多少温馨
I've heard it in the chillest land --
And on the strangest Sea --
  Yet, never, in Extremity,

It asked a crumb -- of Me.

Dickinson introduces her metaphor in the first two lines (“ ‘Hope’ is the thing with feathers— / That perches in the soul”), then develops it throughout the poem by telling what the bird does (sing), how it

reacts to hardship (it is unabashed in the storm), where it can be found (everywhere, from “chillest land” to “strangest Sea”), and what it asks for itself (nothing, not even a single crumb).
