The US enjoy certain geographical boundary advantages which are unique among nations:

1. On her East and West coast, the US has two big oceans separtating her from other countries,

2. She share a long northern border with friendly Canada which has a much smaller population and often can be considered as one country with the US,

3. It is only the southern border with Mexico where much of the illegal immigration problems with Central and South America take place.

However, far less obvious and not often discussed is another source of immigration which the US enjoys tremendous advantage, namely, well educated students from Asia (India and China) who came to the US for advanced study and stayed in the US to become permanent residents/citizens.

Despite current tension with the US due to the rise of China and India, the over whelming desire of Asian students is still the US as destination for advanced studies. Except during a brief period in the 50s few Chinese students choose Moscow/Russia as a destination for graudate studies. The situation with students from India is not that differen from evidences in universities and tech companies start by Indian immigrants. These immigrants represents the cream of the crop from India and China. The two countries invested large sum of resources selecting and educating them for 20+ years. On the other hand, the US only invest in them for 4-5 years (assuming they received a full scholarship for graduate study) and reap the benefits of their entire lifetime contribution which fuel the wealth growth of the US. The US does not spend resources for screening and selection. These productive immigrants are self-selected and often grateful for the freedom and  opportunities provided by the US. They are patriotic and wealth producing - the best kind of citizen desired by any country. In fact, if such source of students were to stop, many US graduate schools will cease their existence or go into bankruptcy. I know of no other country operating and enjoying this kind of enlightened immigration policy.
