That Was The Week That Was (TW)^3
This is the title of a popular comic news program around the turn of the last century in the US that both reports and makes fun of various news item of the week. In that sense the past week certainly qualifies as a monumental week for global and US happenings (not the fun kind):
1. From a field of 22 candidates, the democratic presidential race in just about two weeks narrowed down to two persons, the democratic socialism candidate, Bernie Sanders, and progressive capitalism candidate, Joe Biden.
2. Practically all events of crowd size larger than 150 persons, sports or otherwise, in the US nationwide were cancelled or indefinitely postponed. Regular live TV program were broadcasting in an empty theater.
3. Most schools and universities have closed or switched to on line classes.
4. Political leaders of both parties were blaming each other for their poor handling of this medical pandemic.
5. The economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic will be severe. General agreement among experts is that we are heading into a severe global recession. The stock markets worldwide certainly think so.
6. Restaurants businesses are way down. Many will face permanent closing with related severe unemployment problems.
7. Although currently we are well stocked with food provisions and avoiding as many close social contacts as possible, we fear that situation may evolve to something more chaotic and dangerous. The over 80 population are the most vulnerable.
We hope the world and ourselves will survive this pandemic in reasonable shape.
