A 36 year old tradition of the Chinese American Association of Lexington (CAAL) is the election forum sponsored by CAAL of the annual local election for various town wide offices (served by unpaid local volunteers). Currently there are two town wide offices- the housing authority and the school committee – occupied by by Chinese Americans – as well as nearly a dozen CA town meeting members (same as congressman for federal offices but for legislating local matters). Since Lexington CAs (some 400 voting families) are very active and can sway local election outcomes, candidate for local office always compete for our endorsements. CAAL Election Forum is where the candidates get a chance to represent their qualifications and positions. The year 2019 is no exception. It is democracy in its purest form with no political party influence and/or nasty dirty tricks and where individual votes can in fact make a difference. In the past, the forum meeting always take place in our home. With the new community center established in 2015, the forum now takes place there.
