There comes a time in the life of every person/family to simplify living arrangements due to age and inability to deal with the many demands of household maintenance. For the middle class of the US, this means selling your home and moving closer to your adult children and to a retirement community or smaller condo/apartment so that chores such as lawn mowing, snow shoveling, and house maintenance are taken care of by others. We faced this decision a few years back, looked into various possibilities , and finally decided against the task of moving and downsizing for a number of reasons:
.Both of us even though passed our 80s are still healthy,
.After a failed attempt to de-clutter our possessions after 50+ years of living in one house, we rather leave the problem of disposing our belongs to our children and don’t want to know (that they will simply throw away everything in a dumpster),
.We love and still active in the community and don’t want to move,
.We can out-source most of the household chores to others,
.Although we can reduce our expenses by moving, we don’t see the need at present in spending more efficiently our retirement saving which we hard-earned ourselves. As our children jokingly said to us “the money you spend are yours, the money you keep in your bank are ours”. And all our grown children are financially independent and successful. They have no need for inheritance. Thus, so long there are two of us we have decided to stay put and not bother with this tasking of “downsizing”
