For new readers and those who request to be“好友good friends” please read my 公告栏firstIn earlier blogs of ScienceNet, there were plenty of articles (including those by myself) reporting on the irregular behaviors of Chinese authors/scholars regarding the publishing of scientific articles and the bad influence of the tight coupling of fame and fortune. These are well known. However, recently for the first time, I read in the pages of ScienceNet about the practice of paying cash rewards to authors for the publication of article in prestige journals. See “Nature 批评国内大学对CNS论文奖励http://blog.sciencenet.cn/blog-39731-1066041.html“ as well as reporting of this in oversea publications.“The Truth aboutChina’s Cash-for-Publication Policy - MIT Technology Reviewhttps://www.technologyreview.com/s/608266/the-truth-about-chinas-cash-for-publication-policy/?utm_source=The+Sinocism+China+Newsletter&utm_campaign=9a4e861aa6-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_07_13&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_171f237867-9a4e861aa6-29662525&mc_cid=9a4e861aa6&mc_eid=075fc46cc2 “which documented the wide spread nature of this practice with detailed data about the amount of payment for publication of paper in individual journals depending on its impact factors. While I appreciate society providing incentives/rewards for excellence in research, this is really carrying the tight coupling of “fame and fortune” to another level never imagined by me. The unintended consequence of this will further delay the recognition and respect of Chinese science and technology on the world stage. I was shocked by my own naivety. No wonder my wife told me years ago that I am unfit to live in China long term.
