Be aware of what you post or send!

In this day and age, we have given up the traditional way of communications such as letter writing or paper-based journal. Instead, we heavily rely on electronic media to communicate such as what I am doing now. With constant heavy pressure from every corner of our life, we have become busier and busier, and it seems we do not have enough time to check on what we have written down, which may come back to bite us. When a student ready for graduate school, he/she sends an email to professors for graduate study. S/he is probably too busy  to send out so many inquiring letters that s/he does not have enough time to proof-read the email message, and forgets to change the professor'a name or the university name. You know what happens next and the message would quickly be put into the trash can without being read! Well, this is not crucial because there are just too many professors you can choose, and screwing up one or two does not matter that much. What about some other cases?

In the morning, I just read a piece of news from ESPN sports webpage under College Football. A backup quarterback tweeted "Why should we have to go to class if we came here to play FOOTBALL, we ain't come to play SCHOOL classes are POINTLESS." This immediately attracted media attention and he may head to trouble. In USA, student athlete indeed mainly plays a sport even on the scholarship. Granted, its main task is probably to perform well on that sport. However, the first priority in college sports is education and classes with some minimum requirements (on grade point average or GPA) are a must, at least according to the rule. Realizing the potential consequence (banning from the sport participation), he immediately erased the tweet. But it was too late and the message was already spread out. We understand that the student was probably out of frustration, and really wanted to express his opinion on this issue, but you have to be aware of the media you are using, and sometimes you just cannot say something in public, period!

We have seen too many people who had to resign from their current envious jobs just because of some messages posted in public or said in public. As a teacher of a course on computer networks, I constantly remind of my students being aware of what is sent out when enjoying the convenience of the Internet.

Well, probably I will be bitten by this message I posted! Stayed tuned...
