On the basis of research impact, UNSW Mathematics is number one in the Oceania region and number fourteen in the world. In 2002, Science Watch published rankings of Mathematics Departments from all over the world, based on quantity (total number of citations) and quality (impact made by papers). UNSW School of Mathematics and Statistics was ranked number fourteen on the basis of research impact (ahead of MIT and the University of Oxford), and was the only University outside North America and Europe to make this list. UNSW Mathematics achieved the highest ranking in Australia for both quality and quantity.

In general terms studying Mathematics at UNSW will provide you with the quantitative skills and prestige university qualifications that will enable you to become employed in a variety of different areas including finance, resource management, health, operations research, and many others. At the same time by studying mathematics at UNSW you will be intellectually stimulated and you will meet fellow students that will also go on to become leading professionals across a range of industries.

UNSW has a lot going for it as a university. It is located close to both the city and the beach (more below), it's a leading tertiary institution worldwide and it has first class educational, sporting and social facilities. It also has a large student exchange program with over 100 universities in 26 countries participating. During the period of exchange, students remain enrolled at UNSW and pay normal tuition and activity fees - either HECS, Local or International Fees. The overseas university waives tuition fees for exchange students, but students are responsible for their own travel, accommodation and living expenses.

UNSW Mathematics is the largest School of Mathematics and Statistics in Australia, with the widest choice of courses and the most flexible programs.
