Key US Science and Engineering Indicators 2008

The National Science Foundation of the US in their report NSB -08-2 (issued by the National Science Board) highlighted many key science and engineering indicators for 2008 which are divided into three categories

a.      S&E spending

·         US R&D investment totaled 340 billion (measured in 2006) which are more than any other nation and more than all other G7 countries combined

·         The US allocates a larger share of its higher education R&D investment to the natural sciences that most other OECD countries (i.e. mostly European countries)

·         The federal government funds the majority of basic research while industry funds majority of development

·         Universities perform the majority of basic research while industry perform the majority of applied R&D

·         More than half of all US federal R&D investment is spent in support of defense (note this include the support of basic research by the Department of Defense (DoD))

·         The National Institute of Health accounts for most federal support for research in the life sciences while the DoD accounts for much of research investment in engineering

b.      S&E degree production and work force development

·         Since 1960 the US S&E workforce has grown faster than the full work force

·         The number of degrees awarded in S&E by US colleges and universities continues to grow although there are evidence of recent declines in computer science at the BS and MS degree levels

·         Interest in computer science major among S&E freshman has decline in recent years

c.       Knowledge output

·         Between 2000 and 2005, US S&E articles increased at an average rate of 1.3% per year. US authors accounts for 29% of the world total

·         US leads in filing triadic patents (filing in all three major patent offices). Followed by Japan, Germany, France and UK

·         US patent citation to S&E articles rose rapidly through the late 1990s with the largest increase seen in citations to academic articles in the biomedical fields.
