This study has applied both literature and archaeological data to perform a visual interpretation of the SPOT-5 data and draw the interpreted images of Yangzhou City, which was constructed during the Spring and Autumn Period (i.e. 486BC), at different points in history based on GIS. The rules and reasons of urban changes in the ancient Yangzhou City were then analyzed. The ancient Hancheng City was a place to station forces and store supplies. Its establishment had served the needs of the hegemony of the area south of the Yellow River. The urban changes in Yangzhou City had been influenced mainly by the following two factors within a period of nearly 2500 years: (1) the southward movement of the Grand Canal and the Yangtze River; and (2) frequent wars or other military actions. Before the Sui and Tang Dynasties (581~907AD), the former is a major influence. After that, the latter is the main influencing factor.
