最近见了本有趣的新书，Big Science: Ernest Lawrence and the Invention that Launched theMilitary-Industrial Complex（by Michael Hiltzik, Simon & Schuster, July 2015），从Lawrence的加速器说到曼哈顿计划和最近的LHC，故事很有趣，是我陌生的一段科学史。不过这些“大科学”也许更该叫大技术（还有“大军事”），似乎没生出多少真正的“大”科学来。历史上的大科学都是个人玩儿出来的，以后我想也是那样。做科学如做梦，要成千上万的人一块儿做梦玩儿，倒真需要“大技术”的发明来帮忙，等着吧。

20多年前，Steven Weinberg的超级对撞机（SSC）梦想破灭了，他很在意那个大东西，是与他的“终极理论梦”连在一起的。温老后来这样概括SSC悲剧：Then in 1992 the House of Representatives canceled funding for the SSC. Funding was restored by a House–Senate conference committee, but the next year the same happened again, and this time the House would not go along with the recommendation of the conference committee. After the expenditure of almost two billion dollars and thousands of man-years, the SSC was dead. （他还提到一个有趣却自然的原因：本来很多议员都赞同SSC，但当地址选在Texas之后，其他州的议员就变心了。见Crisis of Big Science，发表在2012年5月10日The New York Review of Books）

在LHC即将发现Higgs粒子时，温老认为它还不足以将我们引向终极理论，所以还需要向政府申请更大的机器（So in the next decade, physicists are probably going to ask their governments for support for whatever new and more powerful accelerator we then think will be needed.）。不过，他还是感到危机，危机不在于科学，而在于税收——他认为政府支出比减税更能刺激经济。我不知道，当大科学与大政治大经济搅合到一块儿时，还能有几分科学。

有趣的是，另一位Weinberg前辈，Alvin Weinberg，橡树岭国家实验室第一任主任，在1961年就发表过对“大科学”的看法（Weinberg, A.M., 1961. Impact of Large-Scale Science on the United States. Science 134 (3473):161–164.）。他说，“大科学”时代的符号，如火箭、加速器和核反应堆，就像中世纪的巴黎圣母院。我们做大科学的动机与前人造大教堂和金字塔的动机也是相似的：我们以科学真理的名义建纪念碑，他们以宗教真理的名义建纪念碑；我们用大科学武装国家，他们用大教堂装点城市；我们用大科学来抚慰科学团体（what ex-President Eisenhower suggested could become a dominant scientific caste），他们用大教堂来取悦神祗的祭司（the priests of Isis and Osiri）……

雨果在巴黎圣母院这位“教堂皇后”衰老的面部上发现一个“伤疤”：Tempus edax, homo edacior，他将这句拉丁文译为“时间盲目，人类愚蠢”（Le temps est aveugle, l'homme est stupide. 英译为time is blind, man is stupid），而更准确的意思也许是，“时间如饕餮，人尤过之”（Time is adevourer; man, more so）。
