Conversation between Roots & Shoots group students and British Prime Minister

Gao Rongyi, from Beijing Bayi Middle School
? Introduction – (greeted the Prime Minister at his car)
? I and other 3 students on behalf of Roots & Shoots welcomed the Prime Minister Cameron. I asked him how he finds his trip to China so far. He told me that it was great and has collaborated with China in many areas. He especially emphasized on cooperating in economy, environment and energy. It seems to me that the Prime Minister is a very friendly gentleman, and is like speaking to an old friend.
? About Roots & Shoots
As we led the Prime Minister to the group, he asked us how was it going with Roots & Shoots in China so far. We talked about the work we’ve done in our school. I told him we had an original creation program in “Bayi Middle School”----“The Green Shadow Program”. It is a project which we call on people to reuse, reduce & recycle paper. What’s more, we have a wind-power system at our school too. He was particularly interested in my comment: “we all want to live in a sustainable way. And Roots & Shoots have helped us to make it happen”
? Feedback from students after the visit
It was an awesome experience to be on the Great Wall as a member of Roots & Shoots with the Prime Minister. Not only did we get to tell him how it was going well with Roots & Shoots, but also we realized that politicians care about the environment as well. It really is a good sign to see that people are becoming more aware of protecting the environment and taking actions to make it happen. If we all work together and keep on doing eco-friendly actions, it is possible to achieve our goal of cutting carbon emissions by 10%.

Yu Tingxue, from Beijing Bayi Middle School(于听雪,来自北京八一中学根与芽小组)
? PM asks the group: “So who is gonna tell me about Roots & Shoots?”
I answered: “All of us!”
? PM: “Right, so why do you tell me about it?”
I answered: “Ok, so I want to tell you why we are at Roots & Shoots. Roots & Shoots is about doing real things. The environment around us is badly damaged and something needs to be done about it. So that’s why we’re here. The Roots & Shoots brings together people who want to protect the environment. And so that’s why we’re here.”

Zhu Siyu, from Beijing Bayi Middle School
? The British Prime Minister Cameron asked what we did in our school. And I told him that we recycled things such as paper and milk boxes after every meal in our café because we believe that recycling is a significant part of green life style as we followed the belief of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

Liu Manyin, from Beijing Bayi Middle School
Liu asks the PM: “I saw your photos of riding a bike to work. I do really admire you for this. I think it’s necessary to let the idea more known to the public. What measures do you think we should take?”
Prime Minister: “You saw that. Unfortunately, I have to go to work by car and had to come here by air. (Then he mentioned that schools should save energy and water, and do more recycled things.)

Du Mingke, from Beijing Yucai School
(one of the students that walked up the Wall with the PM)
I introduced the history of Great Wall to Prime Minister. And I introduced the lovers’ lock. And he spoke about environmental projects of their Roots & Shoots Group in their school.

Feng Yuan, from the Affiliated High School of Peking University
(one of the students that greeted the PM at the car)
? Feng Yuan: “Juyongguan Pass has an important function.”
David Carmeron: “What function?”
Feng Yuan: “It was used to guard the border for enemies in ancient China.”
(She was introducing the Great Wall to Prime Minister)

Song Yunfan, from the Affiliated High School of Peking University
(PM asked about their projects)
Song: “We have done a project which advocated the whole school students to draw pictures about environmental protection, then advocate more and more students to take part in our project.”

Du Yanan, from the Affiliated High School of Peking University
(one of the students that walked up the Wall with the PM)

Prime Minister: Are you from the same school?
Du: We are from different schools. Roots & Shoots connects us.
(When she climbed the Great Wall with Prime Minister)

Sun Wuyuanzhe, from the Affiliated High School of Peking University
Prime Minister: “What did you do except those activities in the Roots & Shoots club in school?”
Sun: I do small things at home, to achieve the aim of 10:10. My family used to keep lights on bright all the night. Nowadays, we turn off the bulbs. Although when we get up during the night, it is dark, so instead we use a torch to light the way. In this way, we can save the energy from the electricity.

Zhou Tianyang, from the Affiliated High School of Peking University
(Prime Minister asked about their Roots & Shoots projects)
Zhou: In fact, now, we are promoting a program named “paperless office”. We are encouraging all the teachers to put paper-capacitor homework online, so it may reduce a lot of papers..
Prime Minister: It could be better if you don’t get any homework in this way.
(Laughter)
Zhou: On average, we may reduce 300 pieces of paper every week.
Prime Minister: So every student may do their homework on computers, right?
Zhou: Yeah.
Prime Minister: That’s fine. So what do you want to do after you leave school?
Zhou: I want to study environmental science as my major. That way, I can make more effective contributions.
