Paralibrarians
As a paralibrarian or library technician, you serve as support personnel to the librarian. You handle tasks to help keep the library organized, such as shelving books, completing paperwork and coding new books. Customer service is another job duty and may include assisting customers with finding books, checking out books, locating the right resource materials and signing them up for a library card.
In some libraries, you may organize or teach library programs. You may also be asked to supervise other library staff or volunteers. Inspecting returned materials for damage, updating computer databases and calling patrons about overdue books may be another aspect of your job.
Training
Some libraries will hire you with only a high school diploma, but the completion of a degree program may increase your job opportunities. A library technician certificate or associate program provides education in the areas of library technology, cataloging methods and customer service.
You may also consider a bachelor's degree in library science if you intend to become a librarian. In a bachelor's program, you may study topics such as library organization, administration, computerized systems and library material selection. Cataloging methods, such as the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR) and Machine-Readable Cataloging (MARC), may be discussed.
You may also consider getting certified through the American Library Association-Allied Professional Association (ALA-APA). The ALA-APA offers the Library Support Staff Certification, which you can earn through meeting eligibility requirements and completing competency tests (www.ala-apa.org).
Employment Outlook
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), from 2012-2022, there was an expected growth in jobs for library technicians, including paralibrarians, of 8% (www.bls.gov). You can find paralibrarian jobs through libraries at schools, colleges, universities, government agencies and museums. The BLS reported that a large number of openings were expected in publicly funded libraries. Funding cuts may lead to the opening of more technician and assistant jobs because they're lower paying positions than librarians, allowing limited funds to go further.

2 Paralibrarian of the Year Nomination Guidelines
http://lj.libraryjournal.com/awards/paralibrarian-of-the-year-nomination-guidelines/
Library Journal will honor one support staffer with its 17th annual Paralibrarian of the Year award in its March 1, 2016, issue. The award, sponsored by DEMCO, comes with a $1,500 cash prize and a reception to honor the winner at the American Library Association conference in June, the award recognizes the essential role of paralibrarians, now the largest constituency of library workers, in providing excellent library service. It places special emphasis on the efforts of the winner to further the role of paralibrarians in the library profession.
Nominating criteria
The criteria for LJ‘s Paralibrarian of the Year are excellence in performing their job, including contribution(s) enabling the library to best serve its constituents and/or its community (whether town, college/university, school, or corporation), the encouragement of reading and the use of the library’s resources, a commitment to free access to information for all, and the candidate’s work to build networks, organizations, and/or groups to back excellence in library work and new career paths for support staff, and improved communication and the breaking down of barriers between support staff and the MLS librarians with whom they work. Nominating letters should name the candidate and describe in 500 words or less why the nominee deserves the award. Supporting letters and accompanying material will be considered, but the nominating letter itself will be of prime importance.
First of the paralibrarians
The award—instituted in 2000—was previously named the Paraprofessional of the Year (though given according to the same criteria). However, past winner Alison Sloan (2010) lobbied nationally to convince LJ that it was time for a name change.
3 Nicolle Ingui Davies: LJ’s 2016 Librarian of the Year
http://lj.libraryjournal.com/2016/01/awards/nicolle-ingui-davies-ljs-2016-librarian-of-the-year/
There is more than enough evidence to confirm the choice of Nicolle Ingui Davies as the 2016 LJ Librarian of the Year, our award sponsored by Baker & Taylor. Take her special skills at communicating with community members in and outside of the library. Then there is her leadership in building and developing a committed and passionate staff dedicated to patron service. That is complemented by her unequivocal belief that libraries are essential services, not just “nice” assets, and the best medium to achieve an informed citizenry. The results of Davies’s leadership convinced voters in 2015 that they ought to tax themselves to the tune of $30 million a year, increasing the Arapahoe Library District (ALD) budget by $6 million.
