So far, Wikipedia only had minimal report of his passing.Personally, Kalman played a big part in my own career. My Ph.D thesis was hugely influenced by his early work (http://blog.sciencenet.cn/blog-1565-250198.html) including our only joint work on the controllability paper. Subsequently during my stay at RIAS (Kalman’s place of work at that time) for six weeks in 1962, I became one of the very early fan and proponent of his greatest contribution, the Kalman filter, a moniker which I named. My exposition of his work via the Bayesian viewpoint and other tutorial (http://blog.sciencenet.cn/blog-1565-851754.html) helped to explain and popularize his methodology. In fact, Kalman himself appreciated this effort that I was explicitly acknowledged in his Draper award acceptance speech (http://blog.sciencenet.cn/blog-1565-16065.html ) . Of course, had he not accepted an offer from Stanford
and came to Harvard instead in 1964, my own promotion to a life time job at Harvard would be effectively blocked. You might say I owed my lifetime job to him (But that is another story for another time) . Kalman does not suffer fools easily and his often public criticisms of works of others which are legendary. But he and I maintained a cordial and friendly relationship throughout my lives. His passing not only brought about personal loss but also a sad reminder of the passing of a golden era in systems and control.
