“Goodbye Mr. Chips” was a best selling novel about a high school teacher’s life published in the year I was born (1934). Itwas subsequently made into a movie twice, a musical, a TV show. I have neverread the book nor saw the film or the show but have heard of it even when I was growing up in China. Last night on TV I saw for a second time the modern version of a similar story, “Mr Holland’s Opus”, which I did see 20 years ago. Both stories are about the joy and reward of teaching which I myself have experienced in my own 40+ years of doing the same. But now with the benefit of hindsight, I view the film “once more with feeling”. Admittedly the film is fictional and rather sentimental but it captured the essence of teaching – the education and mentoring of young minds. As the popular saying goes “at the end of your life, it does not matter how much money you have accumulated but the minds you have cultivated”
