I attended the memorial; service of my colleague Professor Roger Brockett yesterday. Roger accidentally fell from the top of a stairway in his home last Novemeber and was in ICU all this time. Many heroic attempts to revive him was not successful and he left us 3/19/2023. He was 85. The service was well attended in the Memorial;church of Harvard with a reception followed at the Harvard Faculty Club next door.
Many fellow control scientists and former students of Roger that I have not met for decades were in attendance. and we renewed our friendship form several decades ago. It was both sad and celebratory. One speaker even fainted during the ceremony due to excitement and low blood pressure. Fortunately he recovered nicely.
Personally, I prefer to remember Roger with the video speech I gave at his retirement dinner sumnmarizing the role he played in the half century he and I both were in the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Science and in the discipline of control (google my personal page at Harvard for the link).
Jokingly my wife said after the service that if I live too long (I'll be 90 in 8 month time) there won't be any body to remember me at my service when the time comes. Such is life! There is a time to stay and time to leave. Don't over stay your welcome.
