工程哲学的一点思考20100125

1、对于工科同学与工程师来说,可以试着通过哲学反思的视角探讨一下工程的本质问题;
2、科学、技术、工程之间是如何相互作用的,如何理解各自本体及其相互联系与转化;
3、哲学的目的是思想的逻辑净化,哲学不是一个理论而是一个理论活动,哲学的结果不是许多哲学命题而是使命题清楚的理论活动;
4、Science
    - Science is defined by Webster's Dictionary as:
    i. A branch of knowledge or study dealing with a body of facts of truths systematically arranged and showing the operational general laws: the mathematical science.
    ii. Systematic knowledge of the physical or material world gained through observation or physical science.
    iii. Any of the branches of natural or physical science.
       Technology
    - Technology is defined as:
    i. The branch of knowledge that deals with the creation and use of technical means and their interrelation with life, society, and the environment, drawing upon such subjects as industrial arts, engineering, applied science, and pure science.
    ii. The terminology of an art, science, etc.; technical nomenclature.
    iii. A technological process, invention, method, or the like.
    iv. The sum of the ways in which social groups provide themselves with the material objects of their civilization.
      Engineering
    - Definition by Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand:
   
    “ Engineers will translate into action the dreams of humanity, traditional knowledge and the concepts of science to achieve sustainable management of the planet through the creative application of technology.

5、从科学哲学到工程哲学
In general, the tho professions are very different:
    - Science -> understanding the nature of things [Why]
    - How -> the production of commercially products [How]
Nevertheless, the philosophy of science does have a contribution to make to a philosophy of engineering:
    - In the physical science, a thing could be analyzed and a model of its action demonstrated at each levels of reality.
    - as we know, engineering is a continuing social activity, producing knowledge that is in turn the means for further production of knowledge.
As for example, the new discovery of human genetic development is useful as a description behavior at one level (scientific findings), but then, the new experimental techniques to produce a large scale outputs (jointly by engineers) would be needed to discover the next level of behavior as for the benefits of a large human population.
Therefore, although scientific knowledge is now necessary for engineering, but it is not sufficient, as the results are not in particular to be based on social context.
    (this is where engineering should come into the main role).
6、从技术哲学到工程哲学
Engineers provide bridges between science and technology, and between technology and commerce.
They play an essential part in meeting the material requirements of society and in the generation of wealth.
In these processes, technological innovation is become the central and a dynamic element, therefore, the contribution of technology is important in making the philosophy of engineering.
In order to benefit from technological processes, we have to adjust to the way we work: we need to pay a price for our benefits.
The price for modern technology includes the specialized division of labor and the standardization of many of the elements that shape our lifestyles.
So, technology shapes many of our priorities.
Thus, technology is a phenomenon of both nature and culture.
Issues of implication of changing technology -> along with the intended results, there are often unintended and unexpected secondary effects:
    - deforestation, greenhouse effect, genetic engineering (clone)
Goldman arguement:
    “ It is not all that difficult to change the world.....but that it is very difficult to ensure that the result of change is an improvement.     
7、The definition of engineering philosophy, the determination of the means, and the identification of what will count as solutions, all derive from the institutional content of engineering's practice, not from the knowledge engineers possess, and not from nature.
