Full Definition of shanghai

1)
a
:  to put aboard a ship by force often with the help of liquor or a drug
b:  to put by force or threat of force into or as if into a place of detention

2)
:
to put by trickery into an undesirable position

维基百科有如下内容:

The verb "to shanghai" joined the lexicon with "crimping" and "sailor thieves" in the 1850s. A theory of the word's origin is that it comes from the Chinese city of Shanghai, a common destination of the ships with abducted crews. The term has since expanded to mean "kidnapped" or "induced to do something by means of fraud." The meaning of the word "Shanghai" in Chinese is "forwarding to the sea" As an example, "Jim has been shanghaied" could be understood as "Jim has been on a journey to the sea", but if Jim was not planning on a trip to the sea, then Jim was probably forced to the sea.
