10.00: Welcome (Rachel and Andy) – brief mention CABLE roadmap
10.15: Research talks (3*15 minutes)
Vanessa Haverd: Extension of the Soil-Litter-Iso soil model to freezing conditions, and its coupling to CABLE
Jatin Kala: Parameterisation of background soil albedo in CABLE
Annette Hirsch: Impact of realistic land-surface initialisation on WRF-CABLE sub-seasonal forecast skill: results from GLACE-2
11.00: Morning tea
11.15: Research talks (4*15 minutes)
Qiang Yu: Improved CABLE simulation of diurnal CO2 and water fluxes by integrating a plant hydraulic architecture module
Martin De Kauwe: Water use and WUE at elevated CO2: a model-data intercomparison
Chris Lu: CABLE parameter sensitivity
Imtiaz Dharssi: What is model soil moisture and how do we improve it for weather forecasting?
12.15: Mapping CABLE research areas – where does your work fit in?
|
Research area |
Goal |
A |
Numerical weather prediction and land surface data assimilation |
To ensure that CABLE can be used in ACCESS for numerical weather prediction (NWP) |
B |
Terrestrial feedbacks in the climate-carbon system |
To ensure that CABLE has the key capabilities required for assessing carbon-climate-nutrient feedbacks in global earth system simulations |
C |
Land-atmosphere interactions at regional scales |
To ensure that regional atmospheric forcing by the land surface, and the response by the land surface to regional drivers (meteorological and climatological) are adequately represented in CABLE |
D |
Regional and global carbon and nutrient budgets |
To ensure that CABLE provides credible estimates of the terrestrial components of regional and global carbon and nutrient budgets, for analysis of carbon-climate-human interactions |
E |
Water resources and hydrological feedbacks |
For CABLE to support credible prediction of water-climate feedbacks, for CABLE to produce consistent water balance and consequently energy balance, to support climate water balance impact assessment |
F |
Integrated Assessment |
To apply CABLE in Integrated Assessment Modelling, in support of emerging major initiatives (in CSIRO and wider) such as the Integrated Carbon Pathways (ICP) program |
The aim of this time is to link people up – both within and between research areas – whether you are working directly with CABLE or not.
12.45: Lunch – provided.
2.00: Introducing CABLE-2.0
a) Repository, what’s supported, build and run tools
b) Communication – trac page walk through
c) Science/code: what’s different between 1.4b and 2.0; known issues
d) Bench-marking: offline, single-site and global; ACCESS
3.00: CABLE-2.1 and beyond
a) How to get code changes into future CABLE versions
b) What’s on the wish list for the next version of CABLE, and when might we expect it
Grab a drink ....
c) Co-ordinating CABLE code development – mapping out who is working on what – is there scope for setting up any working groups? We will use CABLE roadmap Table 2 as a starting point (copies will be provided) – 6 development needs are
· benchmarking
· technical
· land/biome representation
· disturbance
· water
· carbon / vegetation dynamics
4.00: Finish
