Part.2
Introduction
The convergence of textile electronics with energy-autonomy and artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping the future of wearable and smart-environment technologies. Multifunctional textile electronics—integrating energy harvesting, sensing, computation, and communication directly into fabric architectures—offer unprecedented opportunities for self-sustaining intelligent systems.
Recent progress in various energy harvesting devices, flexible energy-storage devices, and neuromorphic/textile-based sensors has laid the foundation for self-powered intelligent textiles. Yet, the transition from laboratory prototypes to reliable, high-performance systems hinges on extreme manufacturing techniques—such as digital embroidery of conductive-polymer circuits, roll-to-roll printing of 2D-material networks, and 3D knitting of multi-layer functional fabrics—that ensure superior electrical, mechanical, and environmental stability.
This special issue in the International Journal of Extreme Manufacturing aims to spotlight innovations at the intersection of multifunctional textile electronics, energy autonomy, and AI. The issue will serve as a platform to bridge advanced fabrication, material science, and system integration toward next-generation autonomous smart textiles.
