In early October, I visited London after an international conference. I walked around the city and had a very preliminary impression on London, and made a brief summary about it here.
1.Expensive lodging and accommodation, but cheap milk and bread.Compared with local people's income, it is possible the lodging and accommodation are not too high, however, for me as a Chinese, three pounds for a downtown undergoound traffic ticket are not cheap. The Premium Inn I checked in charged me more than 140 pounds for one night. A meal including toast beef, French fry and salad costs about 15 pounds (with tax). But milk and bread are cheap. I bought one bottle of 2 litre pure milk with 1.5 pounds, a very large bread with 1 pound.
2. Churches can be seen everywhere. See the list of churches in London.
3. Old buildings and green land. Although this city was bombed by German airplanes many times respectively in World War I and World War II, it still has many relatively old buidlings. The concept of "old" is compared to the "new" in China. Many houses are decades old. Red brick houses are everywhere. Although this city has over 14 million people, parks or green land can be found easily. One can find small animals such as squirrels in many parks.
4. Kind and helpful local people.Whenever you ask for a way, they always tell you patiently, they even lead you to the place or the bus stops; if they themselves are not sure about which way to go either, they'll take out their mobile phones and search it in the google map and then tell you how to go. Their action makes a foreigner feel warm and safe.
5.All colors of people can be found here. It seems no one cares about where you are from and what your skin color is.
6.Railway traffic is well-developed. One can take underground (subway) to most places of the city, and can take railways to the nearby cities such as Cambridge or cities hundreds of miles away such as Edinburgh. Traffic jams commonly seen in the Chinese large cities are rare in London.
7. You can visit all museums, libraries, churches, and most scenic spots without paying a penny. Of course all museums and churches have donation boxes for visitors to donate for the sustainability of the museum.
8.The streets are generally clean but littering can be seen in some small streets.
