爱丽丝的蝴蝶梦

今天是读书日,读书日该读点儿没用的书,如爱丽丝的梦……

 

墨西哥诗人Octavio Paz Lozano1914 – 19981990年获诺贝尔文学奖)很喜欢庄子,也翻译过庄子。1965年,他与法国女子Marie-José Tramini结婚,送给她的情诗也借了庄子的蝴蝶梦:“蝴蝶在汽车丛中飞来飞去”,Marie说,那是路过纽约的庄子。

蝴蝶梦里的庄子走过纽约,犹如红王(国际象棋子儿)梦里的爱丽丝走进镜子里。在Through the Looking-Glass(第四章)里,爱丽丝听到可怕的轰鸣,如蒸汽火车,也像虎啸狮子吼,Tweedle兄弟说,那是红王在打呼噜。爱丽丝怕他着凉,Tweedle说他在做梦呢。“你猜他梦见什么?”爱丽丝说不知道。

“它当然梦见你啦!”如果他不做梦了,你以为你会在哪儿?

"And if he left off dreaming about you, where do you suppose you'd be?"

"Where I am now, of course," said Alice.

"Not you!" Tweedledee retorted contemptuously. "You'd be nowhere. Why, you're only a sort of thing in his dream!"

"If that there King was to wake," added Tweedledum, "you'd go out—bang!—just like a candle!"

 

你不过是他梦里的影子,他如果醒了,你就会像蜡烛一样,噗的一声,熄了!

据数学游戏大师Gardner的解读,Tweedle兄弟抱有伯克莱主教(Bishop Berkeley)的哲学:一切物质的客体都不过是上帝头脑里的“某样东西”(sort sof things)。罗素说这段话在哲学上颇有启发(a very instructive discussion from a philosophical point of view)。

其实,爱丽丝镜中行的整个故事,就是一个梦——爱丽丝最后对小猫说,多美妙的梦啊,你把我吵醒了!“You woke me out of oh! such a nice dream! And you've been along with me, Kitty—all through the Looking-glass world. Did you know it, dear?

全书的最后一段比“庄子-蝴蝶纠缠态”更生动:猫咪呀,我们想想谁梦的吧。那可是个严肃的问题。你看,要么是我梦的,要么是红王梦的。当然啦,他是我的一块梦,可我也是他的一块梦!

"Now, Kitty, let's consider who it was that dreamed it all. This is a serious question, my dear…You see, Kitty, it must have been either me or the Red King. He was part of my dream, of course—but then I was part of his dream, too…”

你说,是谁在梦呢?(Which do you think it was?)在这儿,梦与镜像形成有趣的呼应:两个梦的无限“回归”犹如两面镜子的无限反射。

在卡罗尔的另一本“没意思的书”Sylvie and Bruno里,Bruno也同样地疑惑了:也许是我梦见了Sylvie,这才是现实;也许我真跟她在一起,却是在梦里。难道生活本来就是一个梦?(So, either I've been dreaming about Sylvie, and this is the reality. Or else I've really been with Sylvie, and thisis a dream! Is Life itself a dream, I wonder?
