   20世纪20年代初，美国发现了煤核(Coal ball)。这一重大科学发现拓宽了美国古植物学的研究领域，带来了一大批研究成果，也造就了一批杰出的古植物学家，如：伊利诺斯大学厄巴纳-香槟分校( University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign--UIUC)退休教授Tom L. Phillips。

∮1 什么是煤核(Coal ball)？

煤核：“煤中的一种结核，通常由方解石或氧化硅和碳质物质组成，并有碎片状或显微状的植物残体，煤核保存在内（有时可部分突出于顶板岩石内）的一种特殊的矿化结核。其内部保存有植物器官（一种或多种、完整或破碎），有时也含有少量海生无脊椎动物化石，个别情况也可以完全是动物化石。”

“煤层中煤核数量较大时，常可占据相当的一部分煤层厚度的空间，有时甚至填满整个煤层厚度。由于它的厚度比煤层大，常常影响煤矿生产，中国煤矿工人常把煤核叫做虎子石，意即开采中的拦路虎。”

   20世纪50年代后期，Tom L. Phillips在华盛顿大学（Washington University, Saint Louis, MO）植物系师从古植物学家Henry N Andrews Jr. （1910--2002）[注：Henry N Andrews Jr.当选为美国科学院院士]。
