      19世纪德国地质学家和矿业工程师Carl Bernhard von Cotta (1808—1879)出生于德国中部Thuringia州的Meiningen小镇。父亲Heinrich von Cotta (1763--1844)是现代林业科学的先驱人物之一，他创办了一所林业学校（Tharandt Forestry Academy）。Heinrich von Cotta对古生物也有兴趣。

       1827年，Carl Bernhard von Cotta就读于Bergakademie Freiberg，学习矿物学等。1831年，他到海德堡大学(University of Heidelberg)学习。之后，他还在其父主持的林业学校学习过。

        1832年，Carl Bernhard von Cotta应用显微镜技术开展了化石植物的解剖学研究，发表题为“Die Dendrolithen in Beziehung auf ihren inneren Bau”的论著。这是19世纪德国古植物学的一篇重要文献。参见：

        不过，Carl Bernhard von Cotta一生主要从事地质填图(geological mapping)和矿床分析研究(study of ore deposits)及教学工作。1832—1847年，他先后跟随地质学家Carl Amandus Kühn (1783--1848)和Carl Friedrich Naumann (1797--1873)工作，在Saxony开展地质填图工作。

        1842年，Carl Friedrich Naumann离开BergakademieFreiberg，其地质学教授之职位由Carl Bernhard von Cotta接替。Carl Bernhard von Cotta一边从事教学，一边开展矿床研究。他的工作范围很广，论著较多。代表作有：

Cotta, Bernhard von, 1808-1879.London, Longmans, Green, and co., 1878. New ed.

        1874年，Carl Bernhard von Cotta退休，他的学生Alfred Wilhelm Stelzner (1840--1895)接替了的教授职位。

        1879年，Carl Bernhard von Cotta在Freiberg (Saxony, Germany)去世，享年71年。

Brief chronology of German geologist and mining engineer Carl Bernhard von Cotta (1808—1879)

--1808: Born in Meiningen, a town in the southern part of Thuringia, Germany [Father: Heinrich von Cotta (1763--1844)];

--1827:Studied mineralogy and geology at Bergakademie Freiberg;

--1831:Studied at University of Heidelberg and received a doctorate degree;

--1832:Studied at Tharandt Forestry Academy;

--1832: Began to draft the geological maps of Saxony under the guidance of German geologist Carl Amandus Kühn (1783--1848);

--1836—1847: Worked on the geological maps of Saxony together with German geologist and mineralogist Carl Friedrich Naumann (1797--1873);

--1839: Acted as secretary of Tharandt Forestry Academy;

--1842—1874: Took over Carl Friedrich Naumann’s position (Professor of geology) at Bergakademie in 1842, and held the position till 1874;

--1863: Elected to a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences;

--1874: Got retired; and was succeeded by Alfred Wilhelm Stelzner (1840--1895);

--1879: Died in Freiberg, Saxony at age of 71.
