The Interstate highway system of the US
Italy has her Autostrada; Germany, the Autobahn; and Britain, the Motorway. But
they all dwarf when compared to the InterState highway system of the US. This is a
legacy of the Eisenhower administration. It was planned and started in the mid 1950s
and completed in 1991 covering a total of 75,376 kms. And of course on going repair
and maintenance, make the project never ending.
These highways are multi-lane limited access roads with no traffic lights. It links
every city and every state of the US in a more or less rectangular grid pattern from
east coast to the west coast and from the southern border to the northern Canadian
border. Literally, you can drive from one end of the country to the other without
stopping (except for re-fueling and possible toll charge) and not encountering a single
traffic light. I recall in 1950 for my first auto trip from Boston to New York City, the
journey lasted eight hours along the famed US route 1- the Boston Post road – that
traversed many cities and towns between the two metropolis. Today, the same trip
takes less than 4 hours along Interstate I– 95.
The Interstate system was carefully planned. North-south routes are odd numbered
from I-5 along the west coast to I-95 along the east coast. These are two of the most
heavily traveled routes passing through many major population center of the US.
East-west routes are even numbered starting with I-10 along the southern border to I-
90 through most of the northern states (Actually there is an I-4 in Florida. But
because of the geography of Florida being a penisula, I-4 do not go to any other state).
The Interstate highways do not pass through cities. Instead it used feeder routes and
three digit branch Interstate highways to reach cities and/or to provide access to
regions otherwise not served by the system. For example every three digit highway that
start withwith an even digit, such as I-495,
provides a C-shaped loop that is attached to the parent at two ends. I-495 starts from
I-95 in southern Massachusetts , cuts through central Massachusetts, and finally rejoins I-95 in
northeastern Massachusetts. Its existence greatly promoted commercial and real estate
development in regions of the state previously not served by I-95 and I-90, the two
major north-south and east-west highways respectively in the state. On the other
hand, three digit highways that starts with an odd digit are Interstate highways
that simply branches off from their two digit parents but do not return.
An example would be I-190 which branches
from the east-west I-90 in the north and south direction. In addition the state of
Massachusetts is furthered covered by I-84, I-91, I-93 which link other Interstate
highways with I-90 and I-95. The result is that there is no point in the state that is not
just a few miles or few minutes from an Interstate. Once you are on an Interstate you
can drive to anywhere in the US without stopping. This approach to covering the state
of Massachusetts is repeated with variation for other states depending on local
geography and population distribution.
It is no exaggeration that the Interstate system changed and shaped the American half
century (1950-2000) and the American psychic and culture. Rail travel has pretty
much disappeared. You either drive or fly. Family and vacation travel in majority of
the situations mean driving. The American Automobile Association (AAA) regularly
publishes data on the cost of traveling by car for a family of four per day and the cost
of operating a car per mile. These statistics are in turn used in many economic
transactions and calculations.
My family has driven across the country from east coast to west coast and return three
times in the past 46 years. The most memorable trip was a six week 8000 miles
camping trip with three children (one still in diapers) in 1975. We covered all the
important National Parks in the western US. It was the experience of a life time. You
are totally free to stop anywhere, go anywhere and yet you have access to all the
modern comfort and conveniences at all times. Commercial camping sites are well
equipped with restrooms, hot showers, cooking and tent sites, utility (electricity and
water) hookups. The facilities in the National Parks are more spartan but not primitive.
You are compensated for living among great sceneries. For visitors with limited
budget and adventuresome spirit, this is the way to see America. Some person takes
this style of traveling one step further. They live in a house on wheels, known as
Recreation Vehicles or RVs. These "houses" are equipped with bedroom, living room,
kitchen, bathroom, utilities (electricity and water) and a large automobile engine that
are powerful enough to drive the RV. At any camp site or special RV parks you can
easily hook up to local water, electricity, and sewage to replenish, recharge, and
empty the on board utilities. Many people choose to live in such RV year round.
Sometimes they travel in caravans of RVs with like minded family. Once I met a
person who is a carpenter who is traveling with his wife in such a RV. He was on a
multiyear trip going through every state of the US. Depending on whether he likes a
place and/or whether his needs money, he would stay at the place and find temporary
local carpenter jobs for weeks or month at a time. He has two motorcycles hitched to
the back of the RV which he and his wife used once he is settled in a place for local
travel. He certainly appears to me as a self-sufficient person with not a care in the
world and enjoying his "wanderlust" to the fullest. For a time, I in fact secretly wish
that my wife and I can do this after I retired. Of course, reality sets in once you reach
the retirement age. Nowadays, we still like to travel but we use escorted tours.
In my mind, there is nothing that defines the America's culture and expressed the
love of individual freedom more than driving in your own automobile on the
highways. Once you tasted the pleasure, it is very hard to give it up. You can say a
significant portion of our national and foreign policy are dictated by this. Given the
tremendous growth of highways and cars in China, the same phenomenon seems to be
happening there.
