on Jan 18, 2009. This book which won the “Man Booker award” for 2008 was written by an America-educated Indian author who lives in Mumbai (Bombay). It again deals with the rise of the anti-hero of the story, one Balram Halwai, aka Ashok Sharma, who as an orphan rises from the slums and becomes successively a servant, driver, successful entrepreneur, and philosopher on life. Despite being also a murderer , the readers will somehow sympathize with him at the various injustices done to him, corruptions he got involved with, and laugh with him at the various black humors he encounters in life in modern India. The novel was written from the viewpoint of the “hero” who is writing a letter to the Chinese Premier Wen JiaBao during his visit to the Science and Technology center of India, the city of Bangalore. He wants to tell the Chinese Premier Wen JiaBaoabout the REAL life of modern India. Being a book length novel, it can describe things and feelings at a much deeper and more satisfyingly level than a 2 hour movie. Chinese readers in Shanghai or Beijing , if you can get this book somehow, will thoroughly enjoy reading it as I did (note to Dr.孟津 : since you told me you enjoyed the Movie, you’ll love this book. Before reading this book my knowledge of India was mostly from my educated Indian friends in America and from movie such as the “Namesake” or travel documentaries. This book exposes you to a different view of modern India. I think there are many aspects of the novel parallels with what happened and is happening in China.
