The US is unique among nations of the world with a gun culture. Because of loose interpretation of the second amendment of the Constitution, the US has orders of magnitude more guns per person and ease of possessing gun (including rapid fire machine guns) than any other nations. democratic or otherwise. Just google the gun statistics and you will see. One president, one would be president, and a civil right icon was assassinated by guns in the US in the last half century. The wave of school mass killing due to mentally unstable persons in recent weeks came to a head finally yesterday in the world wide “March for Our Lives”. The passionate youths put up a moving show pleading for more sensible gun control. No one watching the live broadcast was not moved. The gun lobby, exemplified by the NRA, followed their usually successful script by staying low and quiet for the passion to die down in a couple of weeks and it will be business as usual with nothing done as it happens in the wake many recent mass killings. But as many commentators and supporters of gun control say, “this time it is different”. Well we shall see!. One of the many weakness of a democratic system is that “money talks”. The single issue gun lobby can exercise money power very skillfully to defeat all past attempts at sensible gun control. While I am hopeful and slightly optimistic. I’ll believe it only when legislation actually happens.
