Professor Xiaohong Guan, Deanof Xian JiaoTong University, former head of the Automation department of Tsinghua University, and the founding director ofthe Center of Intelligent Networks and Systems (CFINS) was just elected to be a member of the Chinese Academy of Science. Technically, he is the former ph.d student of my former ph.d student, Professor Peter Luh of the University of Connecticut. But technically he is also my former boss at CFINS where I am part time employed after my retirement from Harvard in 2001. But these are beside the point of my article here. When one congratulates another person for a honor bestowed. The title adjective “well deserved” often becomes a cliché. But in this case, it attains the TRUE intended meaning. Long before the term “returning sea turtle” becoming fashionable, Professor Guan gave up a well paying job and comfortable living in the US and returned to China to serve at RMB200/month in XJTU during the last decade of the 20^th century. His efforts at XJTU and at CFINS Tsinghua help put both Institutions on the world map as well as make himself well known on the world stage. Everyone associatedwith him shares the reflected glory of his election.
