The daughter of our good friend and fraternity brother (Hua Wang and his wife Wai), Catherine Wang, led the Lexington High School science team to national championship in the DOE Science Bowl. She is also named as the sole Presidential Scholar of her school (one of the four in the entire State of Massachusetts and 1 out of 161 in the US. Note added 5/19: I just learned that she also was just named as one of National Meirt Scholar for 2017. What award she doesn't deserve?)
Well one more just came in today 6/8/2017 Catherine won a gold medal at the 2017 USA Biology Olympiad and a spot on the four-member Team USA to represent US in the 2017 International Biology Olympiad to be held in London in July. Really a perfect ending to her high school journey.

SUCCESSFUL COMPETITION HIGHLIGHTS IMPORTANCE OF INVESTINGIN NEXT GENERATION OF LEADERS IN SCIENCE
Washington, D.C. – Students from Lexington High School inLexington, Massachusetts, won the 2017 U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) NationalScience Bowl® (NSB) today in Washington, D.C. Thisyear’s championship team in the middle school competition is from JoaquinMiller Middle School in San Jose, California.
“Congratulations to this year’s National Science Bowl Championsfrom Lexington High School and Joaquin Miller Middle School, as well as all ofthe other finalists, for their outstanding accomplishments in this challengingacademic tournament,” said Secretary of Energy Rick Perry. “These studentsrepresent the future leadership and innovation that will allow American scienceand engineering to excel in the 21st century.I encourage all of them to continue their hard work and dedication. One day Ihope to see you working at one of our flagship national laboratories and beingrole models for the next generation of STEM students.”
The top two high school teams emerged victorious from a field of63 high school regional champions who came to D.C. to compete in the NationalScience Bowl®Finals.Altogether, about 9,000 high school students and 5,100 middle school studentsfrom across all 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Ricoparticipated in this year’s regional competitions.
LexingtonHigh School defeated Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technologyfrom Alexandria, Virginia by correctly answering the physics question, “To theclosest integer, what is the ratio of the energy radiated by a 7.8 earthquaketo that radiated by a 6.8 earthquake?” with the correct answer, “32.” Themembers of the winning high school team are Catherine Wang, Derik Kauffman,Joshua Park, Benjamin Choi, and Anka Hu, and they are coached by Nicholas Gouldand Robert Pohlman.
Forwinning the national championship, Lexington High School will receive anine-day, all-expense paid science trip to Alaska. While on the trip, thestudents will take day trips that provide learning opportunities aboutglaciology, marine and avian biology, geology, and plate tectonics. They willexplore the Copper River Delta, known for its highly prized stocks and prolificruns of wild salmon; experience the mystical appeal of old-growth hemlock andspruce while hiking through the Chugach National Forest; and white-water rafton the Sheridan River and travel across the scenic Prince William Sound andOrca Inlet, home to the world’s largest population of sea otters. The trip alsoincludes visits to Childs Glacier and the Alaska Wildlife Center, which is arehabilitation facility for injured and orphaned wildlife.
Forfinishing second, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology willreceive a seven-day, fully guided adventure tour of Cordova, Alaska. They willtravel by boat up the Copper River to Childs Glacier to learn about glaciologyand hike through the Heney Ridge Trail to experience three complete ecosystems.They also will learn about the diverse marine life in tidal pools and see thehistoric Million Dollar Bridge.
The topthree high school teams received trophies and individual medals, and the top 16high school teams won $1,000 for their schools’ sciencedepartments.
In themiddle school competition, Joaquin Miller Middle School defeated Odle MiddleSchool from Bellevue, Washington. The members of the winning middle school teamare Jonathan Huang, David Hu, Wilson Ho, Michael Zhao, and Alexander Zhang, andthey are coached by Raymond Huang and Vibha Walia.
The top two middle school teams emerged victorious from a fieldof 48 middle school regional champions who came to D.C. to compete in theNational Science Bowl® Finals. The top 16 middle school teamsin the academic competition won $1,000 for their schools’ science departments,and the top three teams received trophies and individual medals.
DOE created the National Science Bowl® in 1991 to encourage students to excelin mathematics and science and to pursue careers in these fields. More than275,000 students have participated in the National Science Bowl® since its creation. Students may signup to compete in next year’s National Science Bowl®competitionbeginning in October.
DOE’s Office of Science manages the National Science Bowl® and sponsors the finals competition.
