Last night by accident I happened to watch this made for TV pay-per-view movie of the above title. I started watching at 12:30 am and stayed up over 2:00 am totally absorbed and emotionally moved. The movie had a cast of very good veteran actors, Will Smith, Helen Mirren, Ed Norton, Keira Knightly, and others. The story is built around three words “LOVE,TIME, AND DEATH” and it evolves slowly. In the beginning you are confused as to what the movie is all about (very much like the movie “SlumdogMillionaire” where early snippets of scenes are like strategically placed GO pieces whose utilities only get revealed later in the game) If I was watching this movie in my 20s, I’d say that the movie is manipulative, contrived, and will be quickly forgotten. In my midlife, I’d say that this would never happen to me and consider the ticket price somewhat wasted. But with the hindsight of 83years of living, I feel this is what LIFE is all about. In life, I am lucky to have had the enduring love of a partner and family; my full share of time on this earth; and now time is approaching for the final curtain. Appreciation of the “Collateral Beauty” of life makes me want to say once again “I am a lucky guy!”
