Job Opportunity - Climate Change

Dear Xiaowen,  (Lix note: I don't know this company or the messenger in person)

I am with Sequence. We are one of the United States leading Executive Search firms focused on high profile niche scientific, environmental and engineering related technical professionals.

Just wanted to drop you a short email today as I thought you could be of some assistance. One of our most respected technical and research focused environmental consulting clients just retained us to search for a Senior Project Manager or Group Leader for their Climate Change practice.

Long considered the leader and most respected firm in the arena of climate change in relation to research, economics and technical policy development here in the United States, the organization and its leadership have been at the forefront of policy and research initiatives into global warming. Their activities and efforts have helped contribute to and shape the international discussion / awareness into global warming as well as provide critical data and services to government and public entities.

Finally a focus of attention, concepts such as climate change, global warming and gas emissions have now come to the forefront of public consciousness and government concern. Still, while resources are now being allocated to the effort, the niche of the scientific community and government personnel directed at these critical tasks is still finding cohesiveness and is somewhat formless as we, as an international scientific community, struggle to tackle the global issues of climate change.

With this in mind, I often find the best way to locate talented and capable leaders is to cast a wide net to those in related or connected fields of practice in an attempt discover qualified individuals that might fit to the needs of the opportunity.

I thought with your background, that you might know someone (friend, associate or colleague) who would be a good match to this opportunity and may be looking for a position or new challenge where they could have a major impact on policy and decision making.

Specifically, we would be looking for a senior professional with strong technical and scientific capabilities that could lead projects and contribute to discipline of these initiatives.

Specifically, this would be in relation to the organization's climate change and stratospheric ozone protection practice, and requires the judgment and abilities necessary to conduct and interpret research spanning the diverse technical disciplines required to analyze climate change and assist in development of policy / strategies.

Ideally, this would include contribution to several project / practice areas, such as: climate change mitigation (research, analysis, policy and strategy) with greenhouse gas emissions; stratospheric ozone protection with evaluation and mitigation of ozone depleting substances; assessment and adaptation in regards to regional and global vulnerability from climate change with modeling and predictive science; impacts and evaluation of climate change on ecological resources (land / water wildlife, flora and their varied habitats); and planning for mitigation of these effects.

As one of the oldest mid sized firms focused on climate change efforts, science, economics and policy the organization's operation has achieved significant success and grown steadily through organic expansion; working for a number of high profile clients and projects in recent years.

With this growth has come the need to continuously build internal resources and technical skill set. To that end, they are now in search of a very talented, seasoned project manager / executive to lead technical staff, drive strategic initiatives and help pilot the growth of the organizations climate change practice group.

Primarily, this would include focus on management and oversight of EPA, assorted regulatory agencies and other national and international government body initiatives for the entire organization with creation of technically excellent deliverables. An integrity based company, the firm is driven to create scientific documentation that not only sets a standard for quality in the industry, but is based on proven science and is solidly defensible in the scientific community.

As a bit of background, the organization has maintained itself over the years with a reputation for producing very high quality technical work which has resulted in establishment of a healthy mixture of public and some private sector clients. Because the company is very stable, they have always had the opportunity to go after and be involved with interesting and innovative projects and, with key world and scientific leadership.

Growing holistically with organizational structure based on shared firm-wide resources, the company expands through business development and recruitment of individuals into the structure who become invested in the firm. Key to their continued success is assessment of transition planning for internal posts and on-going development of the next generation of company leadership under current management.

Continuing this transition, they are seeking to find a senior individual to come into the organization and who could serve both as a project manager and hold group leadership responsibilities. Ideally this would be someone that could eventually or quickly progress upwards within the structure to take on a key role within the organization. The right person would be extremely capable and able to supervise / conduct technical work as well as continue to help build a successful practice. So beyond technical excellence, they would be expected to undertake business development and handled complex client relationships, have a well defined interaction and negotiation skill set, mentor junior staff, and cross sell and develop new practice opportunities as possible. Key to upward progression would be the ability to manage technical staff and help to lead business development and strategic activities.

Ideally, we are seeking an individual with proven ability to manage concurrent multidisciplinary projects with a minimum of 10 years hands-on experience in preparation and management of climate change, gas emissions, climate policy, ecological impacts and economics initiatives related to global warming. Desired educational background would generally include degrees in environmental science, planning or related field.

Technical skill set could be any of the sub-categories in the practice area, with active contacts and relationships with key government agencies and bodies (EPA, NOAA, IPCC, etc.) and the scientific community being much sought after for the post.

A flexible firm, they are willing to custom build an opportunity for a more senior executive that was looking to find a home and drive the growth of their practice group. They could also take onboard a dynamic and talented mid-level project manager who could eventually progress upwards into senior management.

As a side note, having resources and being entrepreneurial, the company could structure an opportunity / position to absorb an individual that had business in hand or merge into their organization a small private consulting practice.

Beyond very competitive compensation and performance bonuses, the firm has a strong benefits package (health / dental / medical, 401(k), AD&D Insurance, 125 cafeteria plan, flexible work schedule, etc.) and works hard to structure opportunities that help individuals develop and progress both personally and professionally.

The position would generally be thought to be based either in Washington, DC or one of the organization's mountain states offices, but the firm is flexible in possibly basing the right individual in other locations. They would also consider establishment of a satellite office should the right individual present themselves. Company ownership is more than willing to relocate the right person to the area from anywhere in the country or internationally.

If you happen to know of anyone you feel might be a fit or qualified for this opportunity I would be very interested in speaking with them.

As always, thank you for the consideration and time extended.

Best Regards,

Frank D. De Safey
