Imad L. Al-Qadi,美国伊利诺伊大学厄巴纳-香槟分校(UIUC)Grainger工程学院教授、伊利诺伊州交通中心(ICT)主任。他的研究方向包括:公路和机场路面力学、高级建模、轮胎与路面相互作用、路面断裂建模和测试、界面和夹层系统(包括土工合成材料)、路面材料、可持续性、弹性和生命周期评价等。


中国副主编

Experimental study of the performance of porous ultra-thin asphalt overlay

Porous ultra-thin asphalt overlay (PUAO) is widely used in maintenance and new road surface layers. Since the paving thickness of PUAO is only about 20 mm, it is necessary to study its own performance and the overall performance of the double-layer material formed by the ultra-thin overlay and the under-layer mixture. PUAO and PUAO/asphalt concrete double-layer specimens with different air voids were prepared and the performance of the specimens were studied. The results showed that as the air voids increased from 15.8% to 24.4%, the PUAO’s high-temperature rutting dynamic stability decreased, the tensile strength ratio first decreased and then increased and the acoustic absorption coefficient peak value increased gradually, but the peak value of frequency moved from 400 Hz to 1250 Hz. The dynamic stability and low-temperature bending strength of the PUAO/AC-13 double-layer specimens were higher than those of the PUAO single-layer specimens. However, the double-layer specimen had a smaller permeability coefficient than the single-layer specimen. The International Friction Index showed that after 600,000 abrasion cycles, the F60 values of the five PUAOs were higher than those of the DUAO, indicating that the PUAO material had excellent skid resistance performance.


An intelligent approach for predicting the strength of geosynthetic-reinforced subgrade soil

预测土工合成材料加固路基用土强度的智能方法

In the recent times, the use of geosynthetic-reinforced soil (GRS) technology has become popular for constructing safe and sustainable pavement structures. The strength of the subgrade soil is routinely assessed in terms of its California bearing ratio (CBR). However, in the past, no effort was made to develop a method for evaluating the CBR of the reinforced subgrade soil. The main aim of this paper is to explore and appraise the competency of the several intelligent models such as artificial neural network (ANN), least median of squares regression, Gaussian processes regression, elastic net regularisation regression, lazy K-star, M-5 model trees, alternating model trees and random forest in estimating the CBR of reinforced soil. For this, all the models were calibrated and validated using the reliable pertinent historical data. The prognostic veracity of all the tools mentioned supra were assessed using the well-established traditional statistical indices, external model evaluation technique, multi-criteria assessment approach and independent experimental dataset. Due to the overall excellent performance of ANN, the model was converted into a trackable functional relationship to estimate the CBR of reinforced soil. Finally, the sensitivity analysis was performed to find the strength and relationship of the used parameters on the CBR value.

Mechanical and physical properties and cyclic swell-shrink behaviour of expansive clay improved by recycled glass

The stabilisation of expansive clay subgrades using recycled glass (RG) was proposed, as a sustainable ground improvement technique. Previous studies mainly focused on using RG powder with contents up to 10%, while the current study utilised sand-size particles and up to 40% RG content. Physical properties, compressibility, strength characteristics, and long-term climatic effects on the volumetric behaviour of stabilised clay were investigated. Volumetric responses of stabilised clay were analysed through a constitutive model developed for environmentally stabilised clay. The experimental results revealed that the plasticity of mixtures decreased by 30% as RG content increased to 40%. By using larger RG particles, the strength and bearing capacity increased by about 45% and 130% with the addition of 25% RG. However, adding about 6% of glass powder was sufficient to increase the strength and bearing capacity to about 100% and 200%, respectively. The swell-shrink results suggested that the maximum swelling was achieved in the second cycle in which the clay classification was converted from medium to high expansive clay. The experimental results were also compared and discussed with corresponding data collected from the literature. The outcomes of this study advance the prediction and understanding of the mechanical behaviour of RG-stabilised clay.

In-situ spot test measurements and ICMVs for asphalt pavement: lack of correlations and the effect of underlying support

摘要:

The main aim of this paper is to analyse the performance of different intelligent compaction measurement values (ICMVs) and compare them with spot test measurements for asphalt pavement. To accomplish this, a two-layer asphalt testbed was constructed using an instrumented double-drum roller. All ICMVs [compaction meter value (CMV), compaction control value (CCV), roller-integrated stiffness (kb), and vibratory modulus (EVIB)] were calculated using the same accelerometer data collected during the construction of the asphalt testbed. The analysis of ICMV data showed a strong correlation between kb and EVIB, while CMV and CCV demonstrated a strong correlation only when double jump of the roller drum did not occur. Further, none of the ICMVs recorded during the last roller pass of asphalt compaction showed an acceptable correlation with asphalt densities [measured using a non-nuclear density gauge (NNDG)], mainly due to the influences of the underlying support and asphalt temperature on ICMVs. A correction method to decouple the influence of underlying support on EVIB was developed and validated using existing data from the literature. The applicability of this method for different field scenarios was demonstrated using numerical modelling.
