美国佐治亚大学William B. Whitman教授团队阐述了一项基于基因组序列命名的新的原核生物命名规则SeqCode。该规则自2022年起正式实施，允许为未培养及无法保存的原核生物形成永久名称，并承认之前有效名称，新名称将与ICNP竞争优先权，实现有效沟通，创建统一分类学。

Cover: Without names to facilitate communication among them, each scientific discipline remains focused on only one aspect of an organism. The physiologist sees only physiology, the ecologist sees only ecology, the molecular biologist sees only molecular processes. The disciplines are like blind men and the elephant. In this ancient parable, each of a group of blind men tries to ‘see’ an elephant by touching different parts. Because no one blind man can touch the entire elephant, each has a different opinion about the elephant’s nature. Just as sight would allow the men to see the elephant in its entirety, a precise scientific name would unify information from disparate disciplines to create a single, multifaceted vision of the organism (pp. 1–13).
