We are pleased to announce that Professor Yuval Noah Harari—the Israeli historian, philosopher, and bestselling author, and a faculty member in the Department of History at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem—has been elected as an Academician of the World Academy for Artificial Consciousness (WAAC), in recognition of his sustained pioneering contributions to macro-historical inquiry, his systematic interpretation of the human condition in the technological era, and his continued engagement with the ethical questions raised by science and technology.
Professor Harari has long worked to bring foundational questions of macrohistory into direct dialogue with the critical choices shaping contemporary technological civilization. His early scholarship spans world history, medieval history, and military history, while his more recent research focuses on macro-historical problems such as the relationship between history and biology, what fundamentally distinguishes Homo sapiens from other animals, whether there is justice or direction in history, whether people became happier over time, and the ethical challenges posed by 21st-century science and technology—offering an interdisciplinary framework for understanding human minds, social organization, and civilizational evolution in the age of AI. As one of the most internationally influential public intellectuals today, Professor Harari has significantly broadened global discussion on “humanity–technology–the future” through works such as Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind, Homo Deus: A Brief History of Tomorrow, and 21 Lessons for the 21st Century, translated into many languages and widely read worldwide. Alongside this public impact, his academic contributions have received professional recognition, including the Polonsky Prize for Creativity and Originality (2009, 2012) and the Moncado Award from the Society for Military History (2011).
