Plant anatomy-21: German physician and botanist Kurt Polycarp Joachim Sprengel (1766--1833)

德国医生和植物学家Kurt Polycarp Joachim Sprengel院士 (1766--1833)

          18世纪后期至19初期德国学者Kurt Polycarp Joachim Sprengel (1766--1833)运用显微镜开展了植物解剖学和生理学研究，对医学历史和植物学历史进行了深入研究。

          Kurt Polycarp Joachim Sprengel的父亲Joachim Friedrich Sprengel (1726--1808) 毕业于Halle大学，当牧师、教师。Joachim Friedrich Sprengel的同胞哥哥Johann Christian Sprengel (1723--??)和同父异母的弟弟Christian Konrad Sprengel (1750--1816) 都毕业于Halle大学。1787年，Kurt Polycarp Joachim Sprengel从Halle大学毕业，获得医学博士学位，开始行医。

          1789年，Kurt Polycarp Joachim Sprengel在母校获得教职。1795年，他担任Halle大学教授和植物园主任。1802年，Kurt Polycarp Joachim Sprengel对植物的细胞发育(Development of cell)、组织形成(Formation of tissue)等基本问题开展了解剖学和生理学研究。

          1803年，小儿子（三子）Anton Sprengel (1803--1851)出生。1828年，Anton Sprengel毕业Halle大学，著有德国萨克森州(Saxony, Germany)开姆尼茨二叠纪地层的化石木(Chemnitz fossil wood)--树蕨(Psaronius tree ferns)的研究之论文。翌年，Anton Sprengel开始供职于Halle大学，承接父亲的科学研究。

          Kurt Polycarp Joachim Sprengel在学术界享有很高的声誉。1791年，时年25岁的他被遴选为德国科学院院士(German Academy of Sciences—Leopoldina)，1810年，当选为瑞典皇家科学院外籍院士。

--1785: Began to study theology and medicine at the University of Halle, but gave up theology soon;

--1787: Graduated from Halle and received a doctorate degree in medicine;

--Practiced as physician;

--1789: Got a teaching position of medicine at the University of Halle;

--1791: Married Sophia Henriette Caroline Keferstein (1767--1839);

--1791: Elected to the German Academy of Sciences—Leopoldina;

--1795: Appointed as full professor at the University of Halle; and served as director of theBotanical Garden at Halle;

--1803: The youngest son Anton Sprengel (1803--1851) was born;

--1809: Elected to a corresponding fellow of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences;

--1810: Elected to a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences;

--1833: Died in Halle at age of 67.
