Hello U of A students,
This Wednesday (Jan. 13), you have a virtually once-in-a-lifetime opportunity when the Olympic Torch Relay crosses campus as the relay comes through Edmonton.
The U of A is one of five official venues along the route as the Torch Relay winds its way through the city. The Torch Relay will come down 87th Avenue from Hawrelak Park just after 5 PM on Wednesday afternoon and we’re throwing a party to cheer on the torchbearers—including our own President Samarasekera.
A number of torchbearers running throughout Edmonton are current and former Olympians/Paralympians, staff and alumni of the U of A.
A street party will take place on 87th Avenue between 114th-116th Street—between the Butterdome and Lister Hall—from 4:30-5:30 PM that day.
Please come out, line the route and join the party to cheer on the torchbearers. There will be live music, a Golden Bears street hockey game, student group performances, the U of A Cheer Team, GUBA and Patches, and, of course, free stuff! (first-come, first-served on the swag)
PLEASE NOTE: 87th Avenue will be closed to all vehicles between 114th -116th Street from 4-6 PM that day. For more info on traffic and parking disruptions, see the notice on the homepage.
Sincerely,
