I mentioned in an earlier post and talk (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkrW9rz-rag) the name of one of the two local Chinese American Community leaders in Boston area, Dr. Lily Lawn. She is also a music lover and knows many well-known professional/amateur singers and musicians personally and sponsors their career. On Nov. 11 2025 she hosted a small (about 20 persons) but intimate musical party in the home of Leo and Susie Lu, 魯光休/李式新 (Susie is a terrific a pianist) featuring a world renown opera singer (named 春青 Sp;ring-Young) from Germany of Chinese ethnicity as well as a local professional (Yan Lian 廉艷) singing various songs some of which with well-known Chinese lyrics even an ignoramus like me know since when I was very young and still lived in China some ¾ of a century before in the 1940s. My wife and I were honored to be part of this small audience. I know the entire audience feel the same way.
They say a true artist is a person who has the skill that express what we ordinary people honestly feel but cannot articulate. I must say that when the two featured artists/vocalists sang various famous Chinese song including the well known I LOVE YOU CHINA (我爱你中国) they brought back memories some 75+ years ago and tears to this 91+ year old man’s eyes. And I wasn’t the only person in the room felt this way. In fact the whole room of 20 some person resonanted. There is nothing political or ideological in this! It is simply nostalgia and raw emotion that makes us human!. They also sang some well known Italian operatic arias but none can match the emotional high when the singer reaches the part of the lyric of the Song (我爱你中国, 我的母亲,我的祖国 I love you, my motherland) I and others felt like crying openly.
All in all, it was an emotional and lovely evening only us immigrant Chinese-Americans can feel and appreciate like no others
Best and thanks again Dr. Lily Lawn-Tsao, from the bottom of my heart!
