We mourn the loss of our Editor-in-Chief Steve Long, who passed away on 9th September 2025.

His vision to establish Global Change Biology, one of the first journals dedicated to global change over 30 years ago, was truly ahead of its time. Through GCB, researchers have demonstrated that biology and ecosystems are not simply victims of global change, but integral, critical, and highly complex parts of change.He was not only the founder of GCB but also its heart and soul. He truly believed in its mission and relished its impact on policy and public awareness.Although his career was distinguished by numerous honors—including Fellowship of the Royal Society, membership in the United States National Academy of Sciences, repeated recognition on the Clarivate Analytics Highly Cited Researchers list, speaking engagements at TED and the Paris Climate Convention, advisory roles to a US President and the Vatican, and the Top Agri-Food Pioneer Award from the World Food Prize Foundation—he will be remembered most of all for his humility, kindness, and playful spirit.This is reflected in his commencement address at the 2023 University of Essex, where he received an honorary doctorate:“Think big. Be fearless. If you’re committed, there is nothing you cannot achieve. You will spend most of your life working, so take the time to discover what you’re passionate about and pursue it. Collaborate, because the whole is always greater than the sum, and have fun doing it.”Steve’s legacy will live on through the work of countless colleagues and academic descendants, continuing to influence global change research for decades to come.He will be deeply missed.
